Exchanges with Verheugen – the full texts
Below are the texts of my latest exchanges with the European Commissioner responsible (if that is not too strong a word) for Enterprise and Industry, the German Gunter Verheugen.
His letter brings us as close to a climb-down as anyone in his position is ever likely to go.
I have also [...]

The following was sent to all 800 MEPs in the European Parliament:
Steve Thoburn, a market trader from Sunderland, tragically lost his life as a result of metrication being forced on millions of unwilling traders and customers in the UK seven years ago. His death followed a protracted, awesome and highly publicised criminal trial, subsequent appeals, [...]

Sir – Ashley Mote (Letters, June 26) claims that the proposed amendments to the EU treaties “offer no effective checks and balances to control future law-makers”. This does not bear scrutiny.
Under what is proposed, EU action would be limited to those areas where national parliaments have, through the treaty, conferred powers on the EU.
Even then, [...]

Sir
By far the most dangerous part of the proposed new EU constitution is the retention of the clause that gives the EU the permanent right to seize more powers without any future agreements.

This report “recommends the British government sets up a compensation scheme for victims”.

Free Trade with the EU
Sir
Much as I respect Ronald Stewart-Brown’s years of valuable analytical work on international trade, I must profoundly disagree with his conclusion (letters 14 June) that leaving the EU would lead to the loss of the free movement of goods, and is therefore to be avoided.
In every year [...]

Sir
Your report (June 9) about the closure of rural post offices omitted any reference to the root cause.
Article 88 of the EU’s Treaty of Amsterdam, 1997, obliged the British government to seek Brussels’ permission to subsidise post offices. After lengthy negotiations, we were finally permitted to spend up to £150 million [...]

Text of speech by Ashley Mote MEP, independent, SE England
“You are our Neighbours – Not our Masters”, Ashley Mote MEP tells European Parliament.
The British government’s White Paper on the original constitution said that it involved ‘no fundamental change’.
But why have a constitution if you [...]
