The Portuguese president of the European Commission, Jose-Manuel Barroso, told the BBC’s AM programme last Sunday (14 May 06) that he expected the UK to support the proposed European Constitution and that British voters would be won over. His comments were widely reported in the press next morning.

On 15 May 2006 Melanie Phillips,a Daily Mail columnist, wrote a vigorous piece about human rights, which finished with the statement that to restore genuine human rights in the UK means leaving the EU.

The UK is no longer the most eurosceptic country in the European Union.
The latest Eurobarometer reading (published 3 May 2006) shows that support for the EU has slumped in many member states, with Latvia currently in bottom place on 29%.
The Austrians are at 31%, with the UK third last at 33%.
